D.K. Smith replied to the topic Use of symbols in WP the admin username… in the forum
WordPress Troubleshooting and Support 5 years, 9 months ago
Hi Lora,
Dashs, underscores and periods can be used in usernames at all levels: 123-45 ~ 123_45 ~ 123.45
In the interest of K.I.S.S we haven’t tried other symbols.

Hi Vincent,
Check the SSL certificate on the site and/or server. Just saw an intermittent warning that indicated it may have expired.
BTW, many of our hack remediation clients also received no-malware confirmations from Sucuri.

Hi Vincent,
Re-upload all files and folders using a new download of WP, but DO NOT re-upload the wp-content folder.
If above doesn’t fix it, disable all plugins. Then enable them one at a time. When the problem re-occurs you’ve found the conflict.
Try these solutions in that order, do not disable/enable plugins first.

Hi Dawn,
LTNS! The default wp-config.php file includes the settings spec.
A vast number of things can be configured/specified in wp-config. Basic example: you can disable post revisions by adding, define(‘WP_POST_REVISIONS’, false);

Keep in mind that big multisite installations have needs/requirements beyond just getting and configurng a more powerful server.
@Chad: I PM’d you to continue the discussion.

I did a meetup on multisite last month, http://bit.ly/wp-multisite
Over 100 sites can be safe if the site is configured and secured properly.
Performance will definitely be an issue.
You’d have to provide a lot more info to get detailed answers to your questions.

Forget about WP for a moment.
Write out a description/list of what’s there on-site and what it is you want to happen.
1. when a visitor arrives at my homepage they see abc
2. I’d like this to happen when they do xyz
3. and so on
Decribe every step in detail using simple English, not WP functionality.

Try going directly to “YourSiteName.com/wp-admin”
If that doesn’t work, FTP into your site and delete the Custom Login URL plugin.
Then login at /wp-login.php

One or both of these plugins may help:
No idea if either plugin alters the email link. Try them and see what happens.

Pardon typos and mis-formatting above. I’m up late managing a team that’s working on a hacked enterprise WP site and linux server, both of which must go live at 5:00am.

Hi Ron,
Rarely have I been so split on how to respond to a post.
On one hand, after sixteen years of freelancing in SEO and web development… that’s right, 16 years… I can smell a time-sucking leech via email. No need for talking.
So upon first reading your post, I didn’t have much sympathy for you.
On the other hand, I have great…[Read more]
