    For those following this thread here’s an update (big thanks to Margarete for figuring this out for me!!!!)

    1. the suspected problem was that when i pasted in the functions.php code, something got messed up. here’s what the functions.php code should look like:

    2. all the child theme files are located in /wp-content/themes/bp-child/.
    There was no need for a separate /styles/my-style.css file. So the files that currently reside in my child theme folder as of now include:


    Now that that’s solved, there is still one outstanding issue. I am able to edit my style.css file from the dashboard editor. However when I click the links for any of the other three files in the child folder, I get an error message saying “Sorry, that file cannot be edited.” Any idea what I cant edit these files via the editor?

    It’s a WordPress bug that doesn’t allow you to edit the files in your child theme. See
