Buddypress and multisite

    Hello community,

    I would like to have a buddypress community on my site. Would I need a wordpress multisite? If this site has a subscription/login component is their universal login that applies to buddy press? I watched the video on installing WP and BP and just want to be sure that a universal login can be configured.

    I would also like to build this site in a way that is only visible to my team – a development server. When I poised this question to bluehost, they said that I had to load the software on my url. is that correct?

    Hi Dee,

    You don’t need multisite for BuddyPress unless you will be managing multiple BuddyPress site from a single install. Meaning if you only are talking about one community, you only need a single WP install.

    If you do install multisite after installing the WP, edit the functions.php file to enable the network option within WP. Here’s the how to from Codex: http://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

    One small correction to Dee’s comment… to enable multisite you need to modify your wp-config.php file, not functions.php.

    The purpose of multisite is to be able to easily be in charge of many sites. For example, you can create your own version of wordpress.com. Your clients would then have sub-domains or sub-folders for their sites, e.g. yourclient.yourdomain.com or yourdomain.com/yourclient. In addition your client could have theirdomain.com point to yourclient.yourdomain.com

    A big advantage is ease of maintaining plugin updates and more if you have many clients.
